About the Australian Labradoodle Breed

Swinging Gate Labradoodles King George

The Australian Labradoodle originated in the late 1980’s from the efforts of Wally Conran.

He mixed Labrador Retrievers with Poodles. The current bloodlines were perfected by the owners of Tegan Park and Rutland Manor based in the Australia. These dogs were originally bred to be asthma/allergy friendly as well as low/non shedding. A natural bi-product of this being a conspicuous lack of dog odor! Their even temperament makes them excellent candidates to become service dogs and is also a big part of what makes them exceptional family dogs. They are highly intelligent and are a preferred breed for their excellent health.

Most often assume that because of the name Australian Labradoodle, that one of the parent breeds is Australian Sheppard.

That is incorrect. There are five parent breeds: Portuguese Water Dog (in some cases Irish Water Dog), English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel, and of course, Labrador, and Poodle. The difference between our Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles and a typical Labradoodle mix, is that ours have been bred for over 20+ years. They are their own breed differing from F1, F1B, F2, and F2B doodle mixes.

Here is a little more information to better understand what all of this means: When a Labrador and Poodle are bred together, the resulting pup is an F1 Labradoodle. Breeding that F1 Labradoodle back to a Poodle (in an attempt to get more of a hypoallergenic and odor free pup) produces pups defined as F1B. Breeding two F1 labradoodles together produces F2 labradoodles. Thus, "breeding back" would give you an F2B. This is essentially how our breed was started as well. The difference being, all of that work has already been done!

There is much more that goes into choosing a Swinging Gate Labradoodles Dam and Sire outside of temperament, size, coat, and body composition.

Our Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles are tested for hip dysplasia through an OFA and any eye abnormalities through a CERF test preformed by an eye ophthalmologist. Each breeding Dam and Sire are tested for Patella Luxation and Cardiovascular Abnormalities by our certified veterinarian. Finally, they are cleared of any affections for EIC (Exercise Induced Collapse), DM (Degenerative Myelopathy), vWill (von Willebrand's Disease), IC (Hair Coat Furnishings), and PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy).

We are extremely proud of our breeding program, and have been blessed with the opportunity to provide the highest quality, hypoallergenic, and odor free Australian Labradoodle. Our SGL Alumni are the perfect versatile companion. We can't wait to help you adopt your forever doodle!
